Work Experience
30th
March- 10th April 2015- Penguin
Random House
I successfully completed two weeks work experience at
Penguin Random House, in the Publicity Department of their Cornerstone imprint.
Here I developed key skills such as:
- Creativity- I learnt how to make show cards used for events such as book readings or signings. I also learnt how to write a good press release.
- Technology skills- I learnt to use industry programmes such as Biblio, adding events and searching for author information.
- Communication- I learnt how to communicate in a professional office environment. This was particularly in relation to asking for more tasks, and asking questions when I wasn’t sure of something.
September 2013-
present Manorcroft School
I currently volunteer at Manorcroft School in Egham one
afternoon a week, helping the children with reading. I have developed key
skills such as:
- Communication- I have learnt to communicate effectively both
with teachers and, most importantly, students. The class I read with are
in Year 6 and so are quite advanced, but they do vary in level of ability.
- Self-reflection and awareness- I manage to understand my
faults when dealing with each individual child so that I can improve for
the next week.
August- September
2012; July- September 2013 Jubilee
Medical Group
I have worked for two summers at a doctor’s surgery, with
two sites in New Ash Green and Longfield, Kent, as an administrative assistant.
I learnt key skills such as:
- Organisation- I updated patient records from paper to computer,
allocated post and sent out letters.
- Communication- I successfully liaised between reception and
doctors and developed a professional telephone manner.
- Skills- I learnt how to use NHS computer programmes Vision and
Docman.
May - August 2011 NEXT
I was employed as a sales consultant at the Bluewater store.
My job included supervising the fitting rooms, making sure displays and the
shop floor were neat and tidy, working on the tills and looking after the shoe
department. I learnt skills of:
- Communication- It was a fast paced retail environment, so I
also had to deal with queries from customers and collect orders that were
delivered from the NEXT Directory catalogue.
- Initiative- I learnt how to think on my feet and how to deal
successfully with difficult customers.
4th-9th
July 2010 Associated Newspapers
I completed one week’s work experience at Associated
Newspapers (now dmg media), which publishes media such as the Daily Mail and
Metro. I learnt key skills such as:
- Organisation- I travelled to London each day and always arrived
on time. I got sent to different locations, for example Islington for a
YOU magazine photo shoot which I had to find by myself.
- Initiative- I applied for the position by myself, whereas the
others on the scheme got their places through their schools. I also had to
ask many questions about different departments to get the most out of my
short week there.
- Professionalism- This was my first time in a large city office
and I learnt how to act appropriately in a working environment.
I gained a great deal of knowledge about the field of media
on this placement as I visited the Advertising, Marketing and Circulation
departments as well as the YOU magazine.
Volunteering
I have previously volunteered with Kent County Council at a
library in Gravesend, running a homework club. I have also volunteered at
Wrotham Road School in Gravesend reading with children. I am building on the
skills I developed here with my work at Manorcroft School.
Education and Qualifications
Degree
I am currently in my third year of a BA degree in English
Literature and Creative Writing at Royal Holloway, University of London. It
focuses on research based independent study but also includes group work and
project work. I have learnt how to work in a team, to follow my own initiative
and to analyse and improve on my own work. I am expecting a 2:1 when I graduate
in July 2015.
